Last Sunday night Pastor Vicki taught on giving and she talked about having an abandoning trust in God.
This phrase stood out to me - and I wanted to really grasp what that looked like.
So I looked up the definition of abandon.
1. cease to support or look after; desert
2. give up completely (a course of action, practice or way of thinking)
The scripture she referenced was Mark 10:21 - in this passage a man was asking Jesus how he could inherit eternal life. Jesus referenced the ten commandments and the man assured him he had kept them all from his youth. THEN Jesus went to the heart of the man - he told him to sell all his goods and give them to the poor for a heavenly inheritance. Now some may take this scripture as a sign that Jesus is telling us all to give away everything to the poor but I’m not so sure thats the case. In fact I think Jesus was more concerned with the heart of this man than his bank account. You see God knows that not one of us human beings can measure up to holy perfection in every area. Even if you consider yourself a good person - you must be lacking goodness in some area. But that is in fact the reason Jesus came - he came to perfect us - to transform us from the inside out. Not so that we can be perfect for perfects sake but so that our hearts can become aligned with HIS holy perfection as we daily allow him to transform the way we think.
While its true that the message of Jesus is mostly about what he has done for us and all we have to do is receive. The fact of the matter remains that if we truly desire change in our hearts and lives we will in fact have to give some things up for CHRIST.
God knows the things that cause our hearts to stumble - he gets us - knows us inside out. He is more concerned with our heart than how others may perceive us to be - this man was very rich and it had a hold on him. His heart was tainted.
God doesn’t want our hearts to be tainted - he desires that we live inspired and inspiring lives that affect change in our world. HIS ultimate desire is that we would be carriers of HIS divine LOVE and in order to do this effectively we must let go of some old habits and ways of thinking.
How is God challenging you personally concerning your ways of thinking. What habits do you think God is gently leading you to let go of - you can do all things through Christ.
LETS allow Christ to transform us so that we may SHOW GOD’s LOVE to the WORLD.
Matthew 16:24-26 (Message)
Then Jesus went to work on his disciples. “Anyone who intends to come with me has to let me lead. You’re not in the driver’s seat; I am. Don’t run from suffering; embrace it. Follow me and I’ll show you how. Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self. What kind of deal is it to get everything you want but lose yourself? What could you ever trade your soul for?
Ephesians 4:20-24 (Message)
But that’s no life for you. You learned Christ! My assumption is that you have paid careful attention to him, been well instructed in the truth precisely as we have it in Jesus. Since, then, we do not have the excuse of ignorance, everything—and I do mean everything—connected with that old way of life has to go. It’s rotten through and through. Get rid of it! And then take on an entirely new way of life—a God-fashioned life, a life renewed from the inside and working itself into your conduct as God accurately reproduces his character in you.
Matthew 5:13-16The Message (MSG)
Salt and Light
13 “Let me tell you why you are here. You’re here to be salt-seasoning that brings out the God-flavors of this earth. If you lose your saltiness, how will people taste godliness? You’ve lost your usefulness and will end up in the garbage.
14-16 “Here’s another way to put it: You’re here to be light, bringing out the God-colors in the world. God is not a secret to be kept. We’re going public with this, as public as a city on a hill. If I make you light-bearers, you don’t think I’m going to hide you under a bucket, do you? I’m putting you on a light stand. Now that I’ve put you there on a hilltop, on a light stand—shine! Keep open house; be generous with your lives. By opening up to others, you’ll prompt people to open up with God, this generous Father in heaven.
